Mississippi Delta songbird, Bronwynne Brent returns to these shores having entranced the UK on her last visit.<\/span><\/p>\n

Her spine-tingling vocal style has been compared to Billie Holiday, Peggy Lee and Amy Winehouse \u2013 a remarkable singer-songwriter who simply oozes class. Bob Harris, playing tracks repeatedly on his BBC Radio 2 show told listeners her music is \u201cabsolutely gorgeous \u2013 really special!\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Spilling the tea of love and reading the leaves has been the leitmotif of Bronwynne Brent\u2019s work for nearly a decade. \u201cI know,\u201d she sighs, folding into a southern drawl, \u201cit\u2019s not like I sit down and try to write love songs, but what else is more important than love?\u201d Lauded by American Songwriter Magazine as \u201ccaptivating\u201d, Brent\u2019s last release, Stardust, saw her voted Female Performer of the Year twice in a row by Americana UK and called up for television and radio appearances on the BBC. For her latest album, Undercover, the Greenville, Mississippi, native setup shop at Brooklyn\u2019s legendary Daptone Studios. Conjured up with trusted collaborator and producer Johnny Sangster, Undercover is a deep Southern roux, combining simple elements of folk, blues, and jazz into a complex and flavorful brew of truth-imbued Americana.<\/p>\n

A multi-instrumentalist, industry veteran behind albums for Maggie Bjorklund and Mudhoney, Sangster brought in Mikey Post (drums) and Benny Trokan (bass) to fill out her sound. In an unlikely combination with Sangster, Post and Trokan, better known as the runaway engine rhythm section behind the 60s revivalist garage-pop of Reining Sound also The Jay Vons, lay a thick, soulful foundation for Brent\u2019s folk songs. The result recalls the soul-burners of 1960s Muscle Shoals and country-folk singers like Bobbie Gentry\u2019s Ode To Billie Joe. \u201cI Know It\u2019s Late\u201d introduces Brent\u2019s deep, soothing voice, and the band\u2019s driving chops, while she sings \u201cI can\u2019t quit a good thing, before my good thing goes bad, everybody knows a good thing when they see it, good things don\u2019t last\u201d. She bookends the album with the empowering \u201cI Walked Away\u201d, declaring \u201cI walked away, I don\u2019t regret a single word I said,” singing vertiginous high notes over a brain-jangling guitar break and in-pocket backbeat. Undercover sees the once reclusive folk singer from the deep south becoming a bandleader and blues balladeer.<\/p>\n

Using her world of experience to poke out small town prying eyes amid a groovy, organ heavy title track, she\u2019s positively funky lamenting old habits on \u201cWalking Relapse.\u201d On a bluesy cover of Chuck Willis\u2019 \u201cWhatcha Gonna Do When Your Baby Leaves You\u201d, Brent celebrates the forward-looking 1950\u2019s artists patented rock \u2018n\u2019 stroll. Her interpretation of Belgian crooner Jacques Brel\u2019s \u201cIf You Go Away\u201d matches the emotional complexity and sardonic intensity that made Brel himself famous. She discovered the track listening to Nina Simone records, and brought in another frequent collaborator, cellist Barb Hunter, to arrange strings into a symphony strong enough to make it a James Bond theme.<\/p>\n

Brent\u2019s deftness for inhabiting the perspective of a wronged lover makes her voice extra poignant on her songs about trauma bonds. \u201cI don\u2019t play the blues,\u201d says Brent, \u201cbut I\u2019m definitely singin\u2019 \u2018em!\u201d Helmed by Brent\u2019s singular, bold, alchemical voice, Undercover is a ferocious amalgam of American roots music, at once devastating and empowering. It\u2019s Bronwynne Brent\u2019s best recording, made at a studio famous for its soul, by a band known for revitalizing rock \u2018n\u2019 roll.<\/p>\n
